Jusuf Kalla: Stop sending migrant workers overseas

Former Vice President M Jusuf Kalla (JK) has suggested that the government
stops sending migrant workers overseas for the sake of the nation`s dignity.
"The sending of migrant workers (TKI) abroad must be stopped, because the per capita income of the Indonesian people has increased from US$1,000 last year to US$3,000 this year," Kalla said here Wednesday.
All problems faced by the nation should be seen as challenges and be dealt with jointly, he said.
"We must protect the nation`s dignity by improving the national self-reliance. And it could be realized by not depending on other nations, including by not becoming TKI. In Addition, technology and education are also very important," he said.
If Indonesia wanted to be dignified, it must become self-reliance which would be achieved with the support of technology and education, he said.
He cited South Korea and Japan as examples of a success story in self-reliance program. They don`t have vast farming areas, but they could meet their food demands and never face shortages.
To achieve the food self-reliance, the government must be firmed and fair.
"Don`t expect to have dignity if we still expect others` mercy, and don`t expect to have dignity if we still eat rice from others," he said.(*)

RESPOND BASED ON THE ARTICLE
Migrant workers or in Indonesia
usually called “TKI/TKW” become one of people that have an important role in
the economy of Indonesia. In the article in ANTARANEWS.COM, Jusuf Kalla said
that migrant workers in abroad should be stopped. Based on the article, I
disagree with his stamen. I have three argument to suppose this statement.
Firstly, TKI can reduce the
poverty. Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) note that for about 11,9 % or 29,3
million people in Indonesia live in under the poverty line. When migrant
workers work in abroad, they increase the standard of living their family. For
example, their children can get good education and their family can live in
good standard of living. . It shows that TKI able to press the number of
poverty.
Secondly, migrant workers become
the second biggest foreign exchange contributor after oil and gas sector.
Indonesian Bank (BI) reports that every years, migrant workers contribute for
about US $61,7 billion. It’s big amount for an income from abroad sector.
Through this budget, the government can allocate to many sector such us
education, Medical service, etc. in brief, it proves that migrant workers has
an active role in the Indonesia financial balance.
Thirdly, migrant workers improve
the development of economic in rural sector. Their wages are usually used for
business in their village. A statement by Fadli Zon, Vice Chairman of GERINDRA
party said that the velocity of money in villages is increased since migrant
workers begin to concentrate on their business. Besides that, it also can
create jobs for villagers. To summarize, these are a signals that economic
growth in the villages is growing.
These arguments became a concrete
example of the importance TKI for country. Finally, we can see the influences
of TKI such as increase the state revenues, be freed from poverty and help the
economics of villages, as the foreign exchange heroes, they really have an
important position to maintain the stability of Indonesian Economic. So, based
on my argument, I disagree with this article.
